New* Sports and maths extra-curricular activities: a mini guide   This guide was developed by ContinYou and has been updated in March 2012, with support from the Youth Sport Trust.

New*  Strategic commissioning of extra-curricular activities: it makes good sense  With school financial belts tightening,being strategic when commissioning extra-curricular activities is crucial - especially when every penny spent needs to make an impact on academic achievement, attendance and behaviour.  

Attendance and  behaviour: put extra-curricular activities into a whole-school approach    Poor pupil behaviour and attendance can disproportionately affect the overall ethos and culture of any school. Extra-curricular (or study support) programmes, by offering personalised learning opportunities to young people who may be at risk of disengaging with learning, can reignite their interest in learning. This Extra Time paper, written by Learning Exchange member Vivien Janes, offers useful case studies and advice. (Note that, while the document refers to older policies and education strategies, the advice and the general thrust of its arguments still hold true.)

The network builds public awareness and support; offers guidance for parents, providers and advocates; strengthens relationships with policymakers, funders, practitioners and parents, and shares best practices in the field.

Free student access to engineering equipment and software   Student Access is a new initiative which gives students free use of the facilities at Hethel Engineering Centre on any Monday afternoon from 4pm to 6pm. Students can get some extra practice using Solidworks, Circuit Wizard, 2D Design or any other of the Hethel Centre’s software packages; learn how to use 2D or 3D CAD; access equipment such as two forms of Rapid Prototyping, laser cutting, 3D routing, PIC Programming; and receive design advice. Everyone is welcome, attendance is free, as is access to any software packages and equipment. Materials need to be charged for but students are welcome to bring suitable materials for routing and laser-cutting projects. No Child Left Behind - free online training materials and course *   In Eastern Europe and other parts of Europe, there is an increasing recognition that study support has a major role to play in raising achievement and school standards. The City of Westminster’s Community Partnerships, with funding from the European Commission and in partnership with a number of European and Eastern European partners, has developed this training tool for people who are developing informal learning programmes (study support) for young people.
