When we talk about leadership at UFA, we define it as the ability to lead self and others. Young people have amazing potential to be the co-creators and leaders of their own and other young people's learning. We work with schools and community organisations to help them to nurture young people's leadership potential in order to actively engage them as citizens and create democratic change for the future. We've got a long history of training young people to take on the role of Peer Tutor and now we have Peer Trainers who are experienced Peer Tutors who want to train others. In the last 5 years we've developed a young people's network 'YoUFA' and have also begun to challenge schools and other organisations to give young people other leadership opportunities. Schools tend to think first about school councils, but we've also developed a programme where we train young people to be Lead Learners and to lead clubs for other young people, plus recently we've been working with QiSS on our Young Evaluators and Researchers programme where young people have evaluated an aspect of their school's study support provision. What's next? How can we push ourselves to enagage young people in more and more exciting ways? Any ideas anyone? |

Welcome to the Learning Exchange forums Sarah - and thanks so much for setting up this discussion. Being able to sustain programmes and activities is uppermost in schools' and extended service organisers' minds right now, so more examples of how students can become involved in the process of setting up and running extra-curricular programmes would be very welcome. I think we'll be seeing more and more of this type of approach to running after school or before school clubs in future. It makes so much sense and offers huge benefit to the personal development of young people. Here's a link to the Learning Exchange Awards page, which describes the winner - The Northumberland Catholic Extended Services Partnership and the Youth Ambassadors scheme. This is along similar lines to the YoUFA Peer trainers and Peer Tutors. I've also attached an article called Power to the pupils by a young student from Beauchamp College in Leicester. Gareth John explained in Schools ETC magazine how student voice and student inspections have worked at the College - and also how students have become involved in the extended services programme. Hi there both, Supporting and empowering young people to lead, inform and influence the design, promotion, delivery and evaluation of services and organisations has been central to my work here in Leicester Shire. It also formed the main focus of my recent dissertation (MA). I've not enough time now to whitter on extensively about my thoughts, opinions and ideas in this area but suffice to say I have no doubt that delegating power and authority to children and young people (in an appropriate and supportive way) leads to better services, improved levels of engagement and improved outcomes for all concerned. Yoppital Wonga. Intrigued? I've just read this article about how 13 to 19 year olds allocated £6m of youth funding in Leicester city and across Leicestershire. Read it here. Still not sure what prompted that curious name though... anyone know? |

Vote for Lead it! and over 170 young people across Birmingham will become inspiring young leaders for others. The UFA has been shortlisted for some 'People's Millions' funding for a project it hopes to run in Birmingham - and would love to have your support.
