Hi I'm Julie McGee Regional Development Manager for ContinYou in the north east.

Although we have a common passion and commitment to the development of extended services for our children, their families and communities, we've developed our structures and ways of working in many different ways.

However we will face some common challenges but the variety of our structures should enable us to pick out the best, share our experience and support each other!

What do you feel are the key challenges that you face in your area?

One of the key issues we have is the number of consultations / audits / surveys which seem to be coming into schools - for students and parents - at the moment.  In addition to the need for ES consultations, we have a number of other surveys on participation in activities, health, alcohol, smoking etc etc etc!  How do we join up all this information to make best use of it for informing ES provision without giving our audience 'questionnaire' fatigue?

In my area some of the schools are looking at other ways of consulting.  For example one small rural school has set up a Parents Sounding Board, initially of 12 parents, who the Headteacher can email to ask a "quick question", the Head specifically targetted some disadvantaged and vulnerable parents to get them to agree to be part of the group. Other parents are  now approaching her, asking if they can be part of the group, which has now grown to 15.

A couple of my schools are also using the "flipchart and post it" method, where parents come to an event at the school, whilst parents are waiting, they have a maximum of 4 questions on a flipchart, and they put their answers on a post it and stick it onto the flipchart.

I've also advised schools to "add" an ES question to surveys which they are already doing, my schools will be doing the big Ofsted survey soon, and are adding a question or two on ES activity as part of that.

If anybody else has any other good ways of consulting, I'd be pleased to hear them!

Jeremy Cripps, CEO of Children North East has some interesting thoughts so I thought I'd post the link here for members up in the North East (this forum has been very quiet for a while!) - perhaps this might offer you some grist for discussion.
