HI, HAS ANYBODY GOT ANY INFO ON ADVICE TO SCHOOLS ON SAFEGUARDING AND EXTENDED SERVICES? WE ARE BEING ASKED BY MORE AND MORE SCHOOLS FOR ADVICE ON PROCEDURES, WHICH IS QUITE WORRYING AS WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN DOING PRIOR TO THE NEW RULES? WE ASKED THE TDA FOR CLARIFICATION AND WERE TOLD IT WAS NOT WITHIN THEIR LEGAL REMIT! WORRYING....AN EXAMPLE OF THE QUESTIONS IS "WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING PRIVATE COMPANIES WHO PROVIDE SERVICES ACROSS A CLUSTER I.E. CRB/PUBLIC LIABILITY AND DOES EACH SCHOOL NEED TO GO THROUGH THE CHECKS INDIVIDUALY" ARE ADVICE FOR THIS WAS THAT THE BANKER SCHOOL DO THE CHECKS AND INFORM THE OTHER CLUSTER SCHOOLS OF CRB NUMBERS ETC AND CONFIRM ALL CHECKS WERE COMPLETED AND SOUND, BUT THE QUESTIONS CONTINUE

Hi Lisa, perhaps joining Safer School School partnerships is a good direction for schools to take with regard to safeguarding. Have a look at this site: http://www.nfer.ac.uk/emie/detail.asp?id_content=1931&id_category=158&id_Ref=6840&level=1&detail=news And I've attached the Safe School Partnership guidance document for you in case you don't have it. I think it's in the Learning Exchange Library - and if it isn't I'll put it there.

Hi Lisa. This is something that is being raised in our area, so although I don't have any answers it is reassuring to see that this has been raised in other areas!

Hi, Lisa,

Within our cluster we have been require to keep information on a secure data base. We are using a simple grid to capture most important information, ie. CRB Number and date of issue, person's qualifications, who checked the CRB documents, and has a check 99 already been carried out etc... I also ensure that each provider has given me evidence of public liability and any other types of insurance that may be applicable.  I would say that each school has a responsibility to ensure ANYONE coming onto the school grounds is checked. (If you would like a copy of the grid just let me know and i will email one over to you).  I also always use a SLA no matter what the activity is and even if its just a one off.  This ensures that the person that is leading the activity takes full responsibility for thier activity and its all in writting.  I think that Paddy's attachement is very useful and i will be looking at it in more detail to help with what weve already got in place.

Victoria

Victoria, nice to see you on this forum too! I wonder if your grid is something that you may want to share more widely. If you want to chat about that, give me a call anytime - 020 7587 5091 or on my mobile 07740 959 064. Smile

"Hi Lisa, just wondering if you've got anywhere with your quest for clarity around safeguarding and if you investigated the Safer School School partnerships route ? Has your Safeguarding Children Board been helpful? "

Hi

We have had a range of guidance documents in place for our schools, depending on what arrangements are in place but it's just a case of getting everyone in all the schools to use them.  We have them out on the council website and send them to co-ordinators regularly.  I'm trying to develop something to make it clearer though as I think it can be confusing.  Also the latest issue is around the liability when it comes to the Disadvantage Subsidy and schools paying for young people to access an external activity. We are drawing up a list of approved providers to help make this a easier for the schools to manage.

Our documents can be found on - http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=8809

And this is another useful document to be used as guidance for external providers

thanks for those links Tanya and cheers for getting onto this discussion. - Would it be okay if I put them in the Library under Safeguarding?  There's been so much mad stuff in the media about safeguarding, hasn't there - and I just hope people can start unravelling it all and making sense of it.

Two government consultation around safeguarding end today - 9 July.

The Public Consultation on a Continuing Need for a Controlled Activity Category in the Vetting and Barring Scheme: The Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) includes a category of controlled activity in relation to children or vulnerable adults, comprising posts in the further education, healthcare, and local authority sectors.  This consultation asks for views on whether the Government should propose in the medium term to reduce this category in the VBS or remove it entirely, by moving some posts into regulated activity, and removing others from regulation by the VBS.

The Consultation on statutory requirements and advice, for CRB disclosures for safeguarding purposes, on workers already registered with the Independent Safeguarding Authority: The existing statutory requirements and Government advice for CRB disclosures for safeguarding purposes, in relation to workers who will, in the future, be already registered with the ISA under the new Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS).  This consultation asks for views on whether the Government should propose to amend requirements, or should amend recommendations, in some of these cases.

Keep looking at the Department for Education's consultation site for reports and recommendations - and the Learning Exchange will keep you informed.
