Access2Activities in Bournemouth: Guidance to practitioners & schools

Key things learnt in Bournemouth were:

  • having flexible eligibility criteria helped to reach a greater number of the target group
    schools needed support with administration/marketing/engaging providers/case studies;
  • they also wanted the local authority to manage funding on their behalf and to pay activity providers direct
  • parent support workers in primary schools played vital role in engaging parents/children/young people
  • engaging all agencies/workers involved with families increased access to activities for
  • people who are harder to reach or who do not engage with schools
  • a flexible approach to funding was helpful – there was the option to redistribute the grant to where it was being used
  • activities for teenage girls need a different approach
  • memberships for clubs need to be available with shorter time commitments that is, from three months rather than annual

Rolling the Disadvantage Subsidy out across Suffolk   This case study from Suffolk County Council aimed to gain an understanding of why a targeted disadvantaged group had failed to engage with extended services. The results showed an improvement in the target group's attainment (a narrowing of the gap); it improved behaviour; enhanced well-being for all and demonstrated sustainability.

Ten case studies on the TDA website, which demonstrate the impact of targeted support.
